His name was Eduardo.
He had left a note on our door, wanting to work in our yard, and I was wanting to help him out, so I hired him.
Not speaking very good English, there was a woman who would translate for him, like when I texted him on the phone.
Working solo was not the usual way yard help worked in our area, but this is how he operated, and for many months he did his job and was reliable.
But then there was that pile of mulch on the driveway I feared I would be stuck with to shovel.
Then, too, there was a check under the doormat he had not retrieved.
I texted the number, but communication with the woman was confusing.
After a long period of no response, one day Eduardo showed up at my door.
There he was, smiling, standing with, apparently, his new partner, a white man.
I don't remember any conversation.
They left and he didn't take his check.
I never saw him, them, again.
Eduardo with his white man now, abandoned me.
